Adventures in the Produce Aisle

Yesterday was grocery shopping day at my daughter’s house, and thanks to a kind friend who watched her kids for an hour or two, she got to do that shopping all by herself. And that meant that she got to browse a bit and look at new and interesting things instead of grabbing the old tried-and-true as fast as she could so she could get the crying kids out of the store.
Thanks to camera phones and technology, she was able to take me shopping with her, and she shared a couple of her finds.  The first was a fruit I’d never heard of before.

Anyone know what that one is? It’s new to me, but now that I’ve seen it, I’m dying to try it. It’s the dragon fruit, and what I’ve read about it says it tastes like a cross between a kiwi and a pear. I’m trying to imagine that taste. Vanessa tells me that it has an earthy taste, but not unpleasantly earthy. Serving suggestions include putting cubed pieces into a fruit salad, which I think would be great fun. Who expects a polka-dotted piece of fruit in their fruit salad? Nobody in my neck of the woods!  
The second is a new take on an old, familiar friend.

I’m a great fan of the California Avocado, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried the Florida variety. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention. I’m thinking my critique group may need to sample some of Angie’s famous guacamole made with this variety …. strictly for scientific purposes, of course.
